Clicking noise

2002 EB Explorer 4x4. I have a Clicking noise loud enough to here with the windows up. It appears to be coming from the RR tire. This is very low frequency and only happens at very low speeds like in a parking lot. This is an intermittent problem. This has been going on for a year now and has not gotten any worse. The noise is the same while braking or not. I recently had the tires replaced and the noise did not go away. I suspected a problem with the Parking brake assembly but I could not get the rotor off after whacking on it pretty hard. Any suggestions on a source of the noise or the magic code to get the rotor off would be greatly appreciated.

Clicking Noise

I have a 2004 Explorer limited 4X4 and the RR tire was clicking. Ford replaced the wheel and hte clicking went away. The wheels have a chrome skin laminated on the alloy wheels, and I think the skin came loose.
Before they replaced the wheel I took it off and bounce and rotated it on the driveway. Consistently at one point the bounce sounded different from other points on the wheel.
Hope this helps.

To remove the rotor you will have to let off the parking brake shoes, they are adjusted like the brake drums. I had to put some pentranet(sp) oil around the axle flange.
Have you check your u-joints?

I have a 2002 Explorer with a clicking coming from the front end. Same symptoms though. Only hear the clicking when slowly cruising a parkling lot and not all the time. It's been going on for a year or so, kind of gotten used to it. Any idea's as to what that might be??

I had a clicking happening when the brakes were pressed. Found out that the '04 Explorer with 90k (!) miles brakes were about worn out, and that the clicking was actually rust chunks off of the rotor that came in contact with the calipers (both sides!) of the good ol' Bosch (formerly Bendix) Drum in Hat Brakes. Also found that the emergency brake shoe material had delaminated from the shoes, something that appears to be a common problem.
Note: If you are doing the brakes yourself, be certain to do 2 things: DON'T let the pin that holds the shoes in place fall out of the back...one of those is extremly hard to get back in! The other item of note is that the emergency brakes do not self adjust. They are adjusted 1x at time of installation. BE SURE to expand the adjuster as much as you can when reinstalling the shoes...mine came loose after 10k miles and made one heck of a noise...luckily no damage though...
