I have what i am positive a 400, but i need someone else's opinion. When i have #4 piston at BDC it measures a little over 6". Now, compensating for the Head, and the dish in the piston, this should come out to 4" no?
What you really need to do is measure the difference between TDC and BDC, this will give the true stroke of the engine. And yes, it should be 4" for a 400 cid.
O.K. I checked the stroke, and it is indeed 4". What i want to do to it is put in a Comp Cams Magnum270, Forged Flat-Top pistons, Headers, and an intake. Now i was looking on ford-muscle.com and they were talking about the vavles hitting the top of the piston is you have too big of a cam. Is this cam too big???
What you need to look at is the lift for the cam-if you're going with a radical cam that has LOTS of lift, .580 and up, yea, I'd say you would have to be very careful with flat-tops or if you have the head shaved. I don't think that the 270 is all that "racy", but, if you contact the manufacture and let them know what you are planning in the way of mods and what you want out of the build-up, they can tell you if you will have problems with clearence and help with the cam selection to ensure you get the performance you're lookin' for. Good luck with the build-up!

Good luck finding forged flat top pistons for your 400. Unless someone in the recent past has decided to make them a stock item you're talking about cu$tom pieces from Wiseco, J&E, etc.
