Considering that you can make a processor for $200 to $300, I would call $2100 pricey.

google "appleseed processor" or go here http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/appleseedprocessor and then check craigslist for free or cheap used water heaters and 55gal drums. You should be able to put together one of those plants for less than $300. Happy brewing!

how did your batch go? how much methanol needs to be used, if i were to make 30 gals using 250 ml per liter, it would get pretty expensive and not worth making.

Actually my batch did not go I forgot it was easter and we had family and a couple of all day horse rides that we had to do so all the supplies are now assembled in the shop waiting to go. If I can sneak out of work early one day this week I will do it then.

On a side note has anyone noticed how hard it is bye a small quantity of Lye ?

You are right, it does seem pricey. But it is all steel, designed to run with vacum and not pumps, and it has a newly designed mixer that completely mixes the methoxide with the oil as it is being pumped into the processing tank. I am planning to be in this for the long term and I want something that will last and be easy to operate. 4-6 hours (with a dry wash) and I will have 80 gallons of bio. Plus, he is going to sell me methanol, KOH, and Magnesol (or Amberlite) at bulk prices, and he will take my glycerine by product back. If I include the cost of my time and fuel to find and accumulate everything I need to build an Appleseed and having to find and pay for the chemicals, the additional cost isn't much.

Well its started

1 bottle of heat
1 bottle of lye crystals
1 gallon of walmart veggie oil
1 2 liter Dr. Thunder from walmart ( not recommended poor quality bottle )

Ok so I mixed up the methanol ( heet ) and the lye to make methoxide this worked well.

Heated the oil to remove any water no sputtering or other so I assumed none

Cooled the oil to approx 100F poured into bottle ( bottle shrunk to about 1/2 size but did not leak )

Added methoxide was somewhat of a violent reaction got a decent boil out of it , is this normal or what did I do wrong ?

When that stopped I sealed the bottle and gave it a good solid shake, turned kind of a dark gold cloudy color.

Now bottle is sitting settling I can see the glycerin forming on the bottom of the bottle . 5:25 PM PDT

I will post updates ....

Sounds like the oil was hotter than 100F.

When I did my 1st batch, I used a Infrared thermometer to check the oil temp, I later determined that the reading I got was actually the bottom of the pan. my bottle didn't deform with a 140F reading

When I did my 2nd test batch, i used a cooking thermometer suspended in the oil from a wooden handle.. This time, my bottle warped with 140F oil.

Here are my thoughts and results.

I think I made decent bio right off the bat good clear looking liquid. Then I went to the washing stage and clouded just slightly, I am letting it settle longer to see if it clears.

Overall I think it worked. Anyone have any homebrew way I can test for quality ?

Thanks

go to the biodieselcommunity.org (the one i posted earlier) and look for the 3/27 test. Thats a way to check if you made good bio.

I never had a violent reaction when adding, i've done 3 tests so far and all 3 came out fine. It did take a long time for mine to dry, about 3-4 days each. But once it did, it was light gold and clear as can be. Ran just fine in my torpedo heater.
