This is my first post, so...I have a 1996 F250 with a 351w. Recently my check engine light started to come on. As i drove down the road it would go off then come back on for a while, and this would go on and on... The truck also hesitated quite a bit. My neighbor is a mechanic so he hooked up his computer to my truck and found out i needed a new egr valve and sensor. So i installed a brand new valve and sensor. I took it for a test ride and it drove much better and my neighbor hooked up his computer and cleared the codes on my truck. The next day the check engine light came back on just a mile down the road and is coming on and off just like before. Its a little frustrating, i like to keep my truck in tip-top shape. I'm back at college now and don't have my neighbor to help. Anybody ever experience something like this or can anybody help at all? Anything at all would be great!

Ask your neighbor to tell you the code/s he pulls and post them here
Does your truck have the test port under the hood or under the dash? If it's the former you don't need a code reader, just a piece of wire and pencil. You will need to know what hte codes are to fix the problem. http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13
The test port is under the hood. Ill have to get the codes from my neighbor. He mentioned something about fords having soft and hard codes and he needed to reset the trucks computer? This is my first ford so im still learning (i used to have chevys! )
At least you crossed over though....when he cleared the computer he probly just disconnected the battery for a lil bit......IIRC the soft codes are the CEL's stored in the ECU but don't neccesarily throw the light on...the hard codes are the ones that do that...Correct me if I'm wrong Paul.....Since your test port is under the hood that means that you have an OBD 1 computer setup.....there should be two ports a big one and a little pigtail....check out the site Paul tabbed in (Conanski) it has a great wealth of information to get you started.Luck
