Preventing tailgate paint chipping?

Any tricks or tips for preventing the chain latch from chipping the paint off the chain bracket on the tailgate?

I know of no way to avoid it if you use chains. I've istalled inside latches and pulled the chains off.

3M makes a clear vinyl type tape product that is impervious to damage. It applies just like window tint and is available in small rolls in different widths. you can easily install this yourself and it is removable if you so desire.
