Step run through for first start?

Hey guys I have an 85 Ford F150 4b holley carb thats been in my family since the dad my father bought it new. Its been sitting for about 5 years now and i've started on restoring it.

Today I removed the gas tank and have begun on cleaning it out. I wanted to know what all steps and checks I should go through before starting the engine to avoid any damage.

Thanks,
Justin

Change oil, check ignition components and battery, may want to spin it over with the coil disconnected till you see oil pressure, and of course check other fluids for level and condition.

A bit of oil in each spark plug hole will ensure the oil rings are not dry and could help
to dissolve any crap or corrosion that may be on the cylinder wall and potentially
bonding the rings to the wall. My friend didn't do this step and the top edge of the
piston got ripped off and after a few restarts since the metal stopped the motor!!
It chewed up the cylinder and needed a complete teardown. A couple sprays of PB
Blaster and some 2 stroke oil or marvel mystery oil in each cylinder and let it sit as long as possible, then
start it get to running temp to burn off the oil and replace the plugs. I would replace
all the vacuum lines at least and the rad hoses since sitting for some reason seems
to make them go bad. Some Marvel mystery oil in the fuel and oil can help those first few rotations on all the components.

To go the extra step, remove the distributor and use an oil priming tool on a drill to ensure lubrication to all the critical areas.

Thumbs up

Hey guys thanks for the responses.

Although I am not to sure on alot of engine terms and what not, was wondering what turning it over ment and how i'd go about doing that. Or perhaps a good site that would spare you the trouble of explaining it.

Thanks guys so much!
P.s. wont be able to get on this till the weekend, but i'll keep you updated on progress.

Turning over simply means cranking the engine with the key, without an electrical source to the plugs, it won't start but just spin or (turn over).
