The question is how long does it take before the a/f mixture gets closer to 12.5:1?
I am not disputing what you say, but it will heat up real quick with any kind of load at 14.7:1.
Even so, it does not save that much fuel by staying out of the throttle. But then again, a small percentage (10%) of a small number (10mpg) is a really small number.
With the OEM PCM program-it NEVER commands anything less than 14.64:1-NEVER.(this value varies slightly from strategy to strategy, but never less than 13.9:1) The only exception to this is when the catalyst, manifold flange,or O2 sensor overtemp protection strategy drops it to 10.10:1 until the calculated temperatures for any of those items returns to a "safe" level. Then it goes right back to 14.64:1. I know this may seem hard to believe, but it's just how it is. That's also why there are such HUGE gains in power on the V10 trucks with a simple flash tuner with a cookie-cutter program.

A richer mixture by itself does not equal more power. Running on the ragged edge with a lean tune will give you more power. Maybe that is why people are finding that the 3v v10 is such a well tuned machine.
Have you seen dyno runs back up huge gains with a cookie cutter tune?
I would consider buying a tuner but it seems the consensus on this forum is they don't add that much if any at all. I had a Superchip controller on my 99 and the only benefit was tranny control.
The best mileage I've ever got out of my truck was babying the hell out of it. It was a humid morning and it was dark yet and I was driving to up state PA on back roads over mountains in the fog. I was running the A/C on low. I would take off slow and use a very light throttle and up the mountains I would just let the speed drop sometimes 20+ mph drop. I got 15mpg.
With flogging the truck on the highway, idleing, wide open runs to 80 mph and 75-90 mph up hills on the highway I will get 9.5mpg.
Babying the go pedal helps in mpg for me, but it gets old quick.

No, a richer mixture by itself does not equal more power-a proper air/fuel ratio does though. The modular engine really likes 13:1 air/fuel. In a truck, I like to be around 12.5:1 for load reasons, durability, and for the case of potentially crappy fuel. The people that are reporting no gains for their tuners have mostly been from inferior products that have hacks programming them-Superchips,Hypertech,Jet,etc,etc...
The only persons I would trust(other than myself, and a few select persons) to tune my vehicles are certain SCT dealers, and certain Diablo dealers. I've heard good about the Sniper products, but have yet to personally test them to see how well they work. There's alot more to the picture when modifying one of these trucks, and the majority of the parts on the market don't do anymore than make the vehicle lighter-simply by lightening the wallet of the owner. As for dyno..I'm working on making time to get over to my friend's shop and do some before/after pulls to show you guys how bad the OEM tune is,the gains from a good tune, and also the effects the CAI kits have on the accuracy of the MAF on these trucks. All in due time.

Heck, I've driven my V10 like I stole since I bought it with 15k on the clock. It now has 106k and no matter how I drive it the milage averages 12.5mpg. I love driving this thing like a 6k lb racecar. This weekend it'll get new plugs and a fuel filter so the milage may go up or atleast the BSEG will get bigger
my wife drives very aggresively..she averages 9 city..maybe 12 hwy..she is not a smooth driver...when i drive..i get maybe 11 city but 15 to 17 hwy...but im always conserving speed and being smooth with the pedal...my wife has tried but she cannot match my numbers

I would like to add what Johnny says is spot on everything he has posted. Also, I am working on getting some comparisons for the mentioned above.
Again great posts Johnny.

Thank you-I try to educate the public on what the best modifications are,and the best way to do those mods.
It's difficult sometimes-the internet is so full of half-truths,myths,and down right lies-mostly from vendors that like ignorant customers. Ignorant customers tend to buy whatever they're told to.

Well. the honeymoon is over . After three tankfulls avg 13.5-14 mpg my last tankfull got 12 mpg. I did drive a bit more agressively with this tank than I had been previously. I also got this gas at a different gas station. I noticed that I had a noticable amount of spark knock under load with this gas. I will be going back to my usual station on my next tank and continue to drive like I want to and see if it was the gas or the driving.
