If upstream (#1 sensor), it's pretty tough to get to. Passenger side, screwed into the exhaust nearest the engine.

If downstream (#2), it on the same side, but on the rear side of the catalytic converters.

I just went through this on my '99 Taurus. You'll be happier if you just have repaired.

I took my trouble code to autozone and the manager told me which sensor(s) I needed and of course he sold them to me. They were both wrong. I went back and raised hell with him and he gave me a third one and finally the correct one for free to shut me up.

I had the codes read at AZone and they told me that they have had other customers come back after replacement of the indicated bad sensor and needed to also replace other sensors as well because the check engine light did not go off. They recommended replacement of all 4 O2 sensors. So that's what I did, it was time anyway with over 125k miles. Access to these is not easy, even with there loaner tool.

I work for a toyota dealership where we charge 39.95 for the M.I.L. condition. I know there are some dealers that will check it for free. My advice to you is to find the cheapest Ford dealer and get the codes read there. The nominal fee is most likely worth it if you get the problem corrected the 1st time. I am not an advocate of dealer fees, even though I work in one, however; I hate troubleshooting with my wallet even more.

Well said! In my younger and dumber days, I've been guilty of fixing so much stuff that I may never know what root cause really was.
