My 2002 reg cab f150 has been havei some strange reving problems at idle and in drive.
In idle the engune revs extremly high, once put into drive or revese it lurches sharply, recently causing a u-jont failure, and when you apply the brake it acts like its going to die then revs back up sharply, but has no problems while on the throttle or crusing.
I'd guess the IAC is dirty. I just cleaned mine using Deep Creep (a Seafoam product) recommended on another site and mine is acting like new again.
Mine acted opposite to yours though...low idle cold (had to hold foot down to cold start on below zero mornings), so my diagnosis may not be correct. But for $6 and a half hour of work, its worth a try.
Could also be a vacuum leak too I suppose, is it throwing any codes?

What is this "Deep Creep"? Where do you get and how do you apply it?
I've had this happen to my '97 F150 4.6 on occasion.

I get mine (spray can) at my little NAPA branch out here in the country...used to be a CarQuest (might still be). Wal Mart here carries the Sea Foam (best gas additive i've used), but not the Deep Creep.
I got mine at AutoZone. You take the IAC off (2 bolts & a wire connection) and spray the daylights out of the inside of it. You may want a tiny brush of some kind to loosen up the carbon too. Put 'er back on and PRESTO, searching idle problem fixed.
I've heard cleaning them only works a little while, and while I can't attest to the long term effectiveness, mine has been working great for 2 months now, and I didn't feel like I did the absolute best cleaning job on it. I guess we'll see...
