i have a little problem with the suspension/breaks.
first when you hit a bump is sounds like the drivers side wheel is just gonna fall off. second when you press the breaks it pulls from the same side.
i took off the tire and locking hub. there is a nasty groove pattern in the outside of the break rotor. ball joints and tie rods look good it doesnt wiggle up and down or left and right. i dont have a chiltons manual yet looks like im going to have to get one. ive done 86 mustang 92 f150 and 88 escort breaks. this is all weird how does the caliper come off? i dont see any bolts. just 2 v shaped pieces that the caliper rides on. do the calipers come off when the bearing/rotors come off?
It would help to know what year you have. Did you run the brake pads all the way down to cause the scoring of the rotor? It sounds like you may have a collapsed brake line or faulty caliper. The caliper is held on with pins at the top and bottom of the caliper. Look here for more info (assuming yours is in the 91-99 range). http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm
oops sorry its a 1991 xlt 4x4
yes that link is the correct assembly thank you. do i have to hit the clips out to take the caliper off? will that also cause the noise when hitting a bump?
Yes, you have to drive them out with a punch. Make sure you make note of how they are installed in terms of not upside down. I'm not sure if that's the noise you are getting or not. The radius arm bushings go bad on the Gen I Explorers, but that noise further back under the truck, not the front wheel. Are you sure the noise is coming from the wheel?
im pretty sure the noise is in the wheel area. im just going to change one thing at a time breaks are my first priority. if the noise comes back ill look somewhere else probably end up changing the bushings. thanks for the info
i got it all apart and i think the inner spindle nut was loose. i could turn it by hand to get it off. i tightened it and put it all together im guessing the bearings were running weird i repacked the bearings and such too. the break pads both had groves. the outside pad on the outer part of the pad and the inner pad had inner groves. man i wish i could post pictures.
well that stupid bearing retaining nut was all that was causing the problem. the vibration/hard pull while stopping is gone. the sound of the wheel falling off is gone. yay i love finding the problem and actually getting it fixed the right way.
after the test drive i did a little search about it. looks like its a common problem with oversize tires on the Xpo. the only problem i have with that is the tires on it arnt that much bigger than the ones that come stock. oh well i guess the guy that did the last work on it didnt have the proper spanner wrench to torque the nut. now i can tell it also needs shock replacements all around. thanks for the help.
