I have a 66 with a 289 that was in the truck when I bought it. I was wondering if there was a way I could find out what it came out of originally. It has a ford 4 barrel intake manifold that looks like it was painted gold at one time. The heads have 66 stamped inside the valve covers. I assume that indicates the year of the engine. The engine tag is missing. There are several numbers cast into the block. The exhaust manifolds are different on one side than the other. thanks
You will need to look at the casting numbers on the block, the casting number
are right a bove the strarter, clean that area some and you can make them
out better. Post the numbers here in this thread and someone will de-code
them for you!
P.S. most small block heads have the casting numbers under the inside edge
of the head, they can be read with a mirror, with the intake off, I would not
pull the intake just to know these numbers! A HI PO 289 have two dots ( .. )
on the upper side of the heads!
On my block by the starter it is stamped c80e-6015a. Above that 8d18. According to that chart it is a 302 block I think. The heads say 289 on them. I guess its kind of a mutt engine.
c8 stands for 68 which would be a 302 block and a 66 under the valve cover is the year so 289 heads. I have seen this alot because people would put 289 heads on a 302 wanting higher compression.

The 302 engine was introduced in the Spring of 1968.
The 289's were continued till the end of the 1968 model year.
