Oil Pan Removal

I have a '94 F250 with the 5.8L (351) engine. The oil pan has been patched, but the pan is basically disappearing from a lot of rust. I've read most of the threads on this subject, read the Chilton manual, and have done some prep work for this job (replaced the exhaust flange bolts so the exhuast can easily be removed). But, I have some questions. There is about 1" to 1 1/2" clearance between the oil pan and the cross member. Exactly how far does the engine have to be raised? Does the engine and tranny have to be lifted striaght up or does just the engine have to be lifted at an angle? I've seen some posts say that only a 2"x4" has to be put under the motor mount once lifted, and others say 4 to 5 inches. I estimate that lifting the engine and tranny straight up will get me about 2 to 3 inches.

I've done this twice. I raised the trans and put a 2x4 between crossmember and trans. Removed the upper intake and then raise the motor. This will give you plenty of room once the exhaust is disconnected. Remember to remove the oil pump and pick up before removing the pan. It's also a good idea to replace the pump and p/u now if it is original.
Let us know if you have anymore questions.
