Hey guys. Was taking a trip back up to school when about 100 miles into the trip i lost power and had to pull off. Truck to spitting and sputtering, switched to the rear tank and it ran fine. Got back on the road, I wanst about 2 miles away from home(thank god) when it did it again, this time it died completely. Took 30min to get 2 miles. 25mph was the best it could do. Had to restart it several times. Kept switching tanks but didnt seem to help. I did put a can of seafoam in the gas before I left. I pulled the codes and I got nothing. BTW, its a 90 F-150 302 with AOD. I also put a new Accel coil and ford racing wires on it this week. Anyone have this happen before, im thinking it could be the ignition coil or a plugged fuel filter. Old baby got me home though.
I've heard people have this problem a couple times after switching to Accel coils. If the old one wasn't bad, try putting it back on and see if that remedies the problem.
Tested the coil again, seems fine. Checked the fuel pressure, its idling at 30ish PSI, and when i increase the idle it goes down maybe 0.5 to 1 psi on both tanks. Seems a little low, what should it be?
if the filter isnt plugged tight it might show good psi but as you run/need more feul threw it it might not flow enuff but at idel or a little above be fine, even if ya run it up to 5000 rpms in park itll still use less feul then goin down the road
OK, got some more testing done. Coil checks out fine, replaced it, no change. I ordered a Motorcraft ignition module and replaced it, no change. Pulled out the old haynes manual, and did some checking. When I pull the connector off the coil and off the ignition module, I am supposed to get a resistance between the coil -(tach) wire and ground. I get an open circuit. When I plug in the ignition module connector I get 2.8k Ohms. Something seems off, I should get some reading there correct?
Forgot to mention, Replaced fuel filter and tested fuel pressure again. At idle, its about 31-32 psi and when i put it in gear and hit the gas, it goes up to around 38psi. Pretty sure fuel system is ok. Truck runs but sounds funny and when you put a load on it, it acts like it wants to die (sometimes). It runs better cold, but after it heats up, you can hit the gas in park and it will rev but when it comes back to idle, its rough as hell.
Anyone have ideas? Im at a loss other than replacing the PCM.
