going to tow approx.3000 lb. boat and trailer 25 mi. at a time.4.2 w/3.73 axle.do ya think I should install a trans cooler.how are factory tow package coolers plumbed sized etc.thanks for any replies.
I believe all automatic F150s come with a stanard 5-pass transmission cooler, mounted in front of the bumper under the radiator. If you have the towing package, you have the 9-pass.
What type of route are you taking? Highway? City? Country roads?
3000 lbs is quite a bit for a V6 F150, but it shouldn't have too much of a problem on flat ground. Just remember to keep your o/d off and don't expect it to be pulling hills at 80 mph!
Around town, and on most 55 mph highways, my 2003 did just fine. I was referring more to long highway trips. I towed a 2300 lb boat on a 600 mile trip to myrtle beach, SC back in 2003, when the truck was brand new. It did fine around town, but it seemed a bit strained at highway speeds. It WOULD pull it in o/d on exactly level and slight downgrades, but anything more than that it would kick down into 3rd. Whenever the truck came to a real grade, it would downshift to second and start screaming at me!
It did it, without any problems, but it felt overworked to me. The transmission did NOT overheat, and no damage was done to the truck, but I would have liked a bit more power, that's all.
