Reason: Problem with IAC valve
A code reader is a handy tool to have, no question. FYI when a IAC valve gives trouble it usually does not set a code that points straight at them.
I have read almost every post on IAC issues. my expedition seems to fit everyones start and stalling issue.
I thought I would either replace the IAC or clean it, haven't decided that part yet.
But after I resolve the IAC problem just wanted to see if any error codes.
Is the Check Engine light on? If not, you probably don't have any codes to read. If you experience cold start/stall issues replace the IAC valve for around $60 and be done with it.
If you have a laptop don't waste your money on a handheld "code reader" as you call it. The proper terminology is SCAN TOOL. You can buy the software and it comes with the INTERFACE to plug into your DLC and talk to your laptop. You might look at AutoTap or EASE. They're both good and a generic Ford edition won't cost a whole lot more than your "code reader" which will only read codes and maybe give you one PID at a time. AutoTap will display up to 24 PIDs at the same time and can do them in any of four fomats you choose from. I like to use the "O" scope format. That way I can see numerous sensor outputs simutaneously to use for troubleshooting comparison. You can't even compare a laptop scan tool to a handheld "code reader".
Most decent code readers/scanners have the capability to interface with a computer. They collect the same data as the software versions. Its up to you if you want to spend the extra dollars on the pc eye candy.
