I have a 97 psd with a 5 spd and was wondering what else I can do to it other than straight pipe, intake and programmer? would also like to keep it from busting parts. How much can I do before it's not as reliable or does reliability change that much with cranking up the psd's?
i used a 3/16 bb. you need regular BB like you shoot in a bb gun. mine was too big of a bb and it put too much pressure, and kinked the spring. now its gonna cost $59 and im lucky to get the spring for that! cant find a junk one anywhere! but be sure to check pressure then.
Definately going with guages as soon as possible. Can I upgrade my stock turbo instead of buying an expensive performance turbo and would it be worth it?
1) if you are going to stick with stock injectors you can change the exhaust turbine housing. the stock housing is a 1.15AR, a 1.0AR or 0.84AR housing will spool up faster and give you more boost earlier. the downside is you will reach the limits of the turbo at a lower rpm the lower size housing you go. cost ranges from about $150-400 depending on where you buy from. im sure someone on here will chime in on where you can purchase those, although im sure beans diesel performance carries them.
2) if you plan on upgrading your injectors up to and including stgII's, beans diesel performance offers their Dominator 66 turbo. i run one of these with stgI injectors and it is a great upgrade. it flows 30% more air than stock and helps out with the egt's a bit. price is $1125 and it is a direct bolt on turbo. no need to change up pipes or pedistal.
3) if you plan on anything larger than stgII injectors, go with the hypermax h2e system. it requires changing the up pipes and pedistal (both of which included in the kit) and i believe requires an intercooler. this is the turbo i wish i went with, but its much more expensive and labor intensive to put in. price for the system is usually around $2400. there are a number of different suppliers for this setup.
......however....before any of these upgrades, get yourself a boost guage and pyrometer guage and upgrade your downpipe! (check out tymar for the downpipe). best of luck.

I was wondering about that myself. I am planning to get some DIY stage 2 injectors but, how long after that will I need a new clutch, tranny and gears in the axel. With all the noise I get from the transmission I have a fealing that will be the first to go. Any one know where I can get broken part insurance for my truck!!!!????
id venture to say the clutch will be very soon following the stgII's depending on what you have in there right now. havent had any problems w/ the tranny or rear end yet (knocking on my head right now).
btw....mini milestone...500th post (only took me 2 years!)

Lots of mods you can do. But what is it that you intend to do with your ride, by that I mean are you looking to take it to the drag strip, daily driver, competition pulling rig, hiway tow rig? The mods should follow what you intend to do with your truck to get best bang for your dollars, you should have an idea of what it's main use will be. As a start you cannot go wrong with an open intake, downpipe, and open exhaust. Get some gauges Pyro-pre turbo install and boost gauge. Then get hold of T Wildman or DP Tuner for some programs. If I was to do it over again would get stage II injectors and detune them with programing until you put in an aftermarket clutch then an intercooler and then aftermarket turbo. In the meantime you could also put in a short shifter mod for your ZF-5, shackle reversal kit and springs to make it ride better, electic fuel system, by pass oil filtration etc etc.....

Hey Scatgo,
You may wish to check into some Redline MTL tranny fluid, thought the syncros where going out of mine as the 3rd to 2nd shift used to grind something awfull...put in 4 quarts of MTL and presto has shifted very well since, did it at least 3 years ago. IMO the ZF-5, axles and gears are pretty robust on these trucks, the dual mass & clutch are definate weak links
Stage 2s are a good call just have them tuned for lower power output till you get the supporting mods to handle the additional ponnies.....OR NOT...and then be forced due to broken parts...heh heh As I remember the cheesie dual mass flywheel and clutch made my truck run REAL rough just before I replaced it.....
For me the broken part insurance rests at the end of my right leg....
