What part(s) make a 17* HPOP different from a 15* HPOP? And, if my maximum plans call for stage 1's, 4" exhaust, 6637 intake (or AIS if the drone won't go away) and a DP tuner would upgrading to a 17* HPOP even be worth my time?

The swashplate has a steeper angle on it, (17* instead of 15*, which means the 7 pistons inside the barrel stroke in and out farther, thus displacing more oil, which means you can hold a higher pressure at the same volume with more flow. It's not needed, but if you can find one for cheap off ebay or something, it's a wise investment.
Here's a link that was in the other link. Don't know if you went there but it's animated and very little reading. Perfect for that not to sober Saturday night.
Like Kris said the HPOP in the powerstroke has 7 pistons.
I did look at that I guess I can keep my eyes open for a 17* pump, but not sweat it if I don't find one. What's a fair price to pay for one?
I honestly have no idea. But if I ever start searching for one I will certainly get the folks here involved. I am waiting to hear about real world use of the new Diesel Site Modified HPOP. I hope Kris chimes in. He is in the know about these things. http://www.dieselsite.com/
A nice 17* pump would be a good deal under $350-400. Considering you can sell your stock one on ebay again to make up some of the cost.
What would be the benefits of putting a 17* on my truck- better mileage, run smoother, less noise? (Trying to figure out how to explain to wifey why I need a $400 part that she will think is unnecessary )

Think about all the excuses or explanations she has ever given you for wanting to spend 400 or 500 dollars. It would be a good place to start in trying to come up with your own BS story for needing a 17° HPOP.
