wires everywhere

i recently traded my car for a 76 F100. none of the gauges in it worked except oil pressure. i took cluster out and front panel off only to find that most of the connecters were cut and wires were spliced into each other everywhere. nothings labeled, and theres five toggle switches with only two switches hooked up: one to the lights and one to power. im really not interested in buying a harness because i want to get an understanding of the wiring. i figure since most of the wires arent hooked up i could just remove everything and run completely new wires. do i need the big bulk of unnattached wires or can i just rip them out? all i need to have hooked up is heat, lights, gauge cluster. am i correct? i dont need things such as door dinger, dome light, etc. any help would be great. thanks

You need pretty well everything in the harness.

I can provide pics or illustrations of whatever you need.

There were 2 style of clusters.

Warning lights (14 pin) or gauges (18 pin)

Some people think they can make one out of the other.
They are wrong.

There is so much to consider.

It would help if you post some photos of the mess.

Yup, follow the above advice, I hate people who butcher up wiring like that.
Take it out and start over, you'll get help here installing it.

i figured thered be too much in there to just mess with myself. i got a buddy at work whos got the harness and stock gauge cluster so no problem with parts. just a problem of gettin it to his shop/garage which is about 60 miles from my house. the local fuzz informed me that my truck had an extensive list of violations and that if it was seen again it'd be on a wrecker. he even got down on his knees to check for mufflers. the cop might have just wanted to sound stiff but id rather not push my luck. im gonna need alot of advice with this truck it seems so be ready guys. i need to fix everything from the floorpans to the loose transmission dipstick tube. the bed is basically held on by wood. much appreciation in advance
