I am offended by your abusive, antognistic remarks. Steam engines and "hydrogen generators" are the answer to everything from male pattern baldness to bad-tempered muslims.
You people with real world technical knowledge keep coming in here and "bursting the bubble" of the back-yard "mechanics" who know better than automotive engineers and others with real-world scientific knowledge.
I say...bring on the steam engines, the hydrogren generators, and...and...

Gee - look what I came across... a "Crower cycle engine"
If Ford started making the EX today I would go and buy one tomorrow, so now I have to look for a good used one to replace one of my puny Expys and I just don't like buying someones problems, but you do what you have to do and I need what the EX has to offer
Well, looks like 6686L's "real world technical knowledge" folks should stop wasting their time " "bursting the bubble" of the back-yard "mechanics" " and spend some time themselves rethinking what they think they know. :-) As Crowler says - you have to be in the business to know the dynamics of engines to come up with an idea like his.
That is why I said in my previous post that it could possibly bring down their average.
The Excursion is cabable of some truely impressive MPGs for its size and weight. I bet that 17/23 has already been achieved by someone here on the board with a diesel and I'm sure Ford could make it get those numbers if they were to reduce some of the drivetrain inefficiencies and like you said do some tweaking and fine tuning here and there.
17/23 with a diesel in compliance with 2008+ emissions? Have you seen what the stock 6.4's are getting? The DPF and the rest of the new emissions nonsense kills the MPG on those motors...

I sure have and while they were unusually low initially, as the motors are racking up the miles and being broken in, the 6.4 is closing in on the 6.0's mpg #'s while being the cleanest diesel engine Ford has yet to offer in the Super Duty lineup. So with a little innovation, I believe a future Excursion could reach levels of efficiancy the current Excursion just can not reach.
Now it looks like Cummins is spending their time developing a steam assisted engine... see link below.
I just keep thinking though that that where the real gains steam offers is in the incredible torque it can produce. I'd have thought steam from a hot engine would offer far greater fuel savings and power assist in any big vehicle engaged in a lot of starts or hill climbing or possibly even at higher highway speeds.

"The addition of this process to the diesel engine is a change in perspective. Instead of looking at heat as the enemy, it is now viewed as a helpful friend."
How about a little reality here ? How about someone "posting" the sales figures for each year's EXCURSIONS. Is there a break-down on how many EX's of each year were built with V-10's, and how many diesels ?
A review of the sales figures on big SUV's, especially towards the end, might explain why Ford is not about to "bring back" the EX.
It got a bad rap - what about the regular 3/4 super duties - they didn't attract any negative media spin?
A new lightweight, renamed 3/4 ton SUV would sell well - if it were electric or solar or anything deemed environmentally friendly or able to fly under the media radar. (Look at how well plasma TVs sell yet are, according to the latest Consumer Reports magazine, horrible electricity pigs. Yet I'd bet these power pigs are in every young "environmentalist's" home and business.
All the industry needs to do is for once get a bit creative and innovative. Look at how hybrids were a dud until they were marketed to the right people and oil prices started to move in their favor.
A big powerful SUV is still needed by many so the market is there.
