The point type distributors are usually cheaper than the electronic ones. That's why I hoped that there might be something to gain from switching from the Dura-Spark to a performance points ignition. I know points are old technology, but if they can offer any performance gains over the old Dura-Spark I can deal with the required maintenance and adjustments.
Also, I have heard that there are other ford distributors that are interchangeable with the 335 series engines(I know about the 385 series distributors). I can't remember if it was the 302/351w or what. But I guess all that is needed for it to bolt in was to change out the distributor gear. Is there any truth to this????
You can purchase a Pertronix igniter. It installs under the stock distributor cap and you set it once. They run about 60 to 80 bucks. I have 2 installed on a 70 Torino and 69 Stang. Never had a problem out of them. That way you could have electronic ignition on a cheaper level for now until you decide on something later.
