transmission swap
My son and I own a total of 5 '83-'93 pre-powerstroke and (1)'96 psd.The question is can we mate a 6 speed man.from newer trucks or is there something like the Hone overdrive?We are trying to get better mileage.

ZF 6 will bolt up, but you loose the speedometer drive as all trucks with ZF 6 transmissions had speedometers driven from the rear axle.
The clutch is another area that will cause extra work, the ZF 6 has an input shaft diameter of 1.375".
Output shaft is also bigger, so if it is going into a 4x4, the transfer case has to be swapped as well.
The ZF 5 has almost as high overdrive ratio, will still work with the transfer case in your truck and is easier to find clutch discs for.

ZF 5 overdrive ratio is .77 or .76 depending on which ratio is in the transmission.
Out of three ratios two were .77 and the other was .76.
The ZF 6 has an overdrive ratio of .72, so that is not enough difference that it would be worth swapping in a ZF 6 with the changes you would have to make.
