I have a ford F-150 '88 351Winsor motor. I was driving it the other day and all of a sudden it went to shaking so I turned it off and got a tow home. I noticed the counter weight that was attached to the hub that bolts on the crank, well you can spin it around (Well I know this is not normal!!) My question will that make the truck shake, I hope you say yes so I can go buy one.
Yes, it sounds to me like the balancer has gone bad. I had a Chev 305 one time and the rubber piece that connected the inner hub to the outter damper rotted away, causing the exact same thing you mentioned. Rubber is a natural substance and does decay over time!
If that outter ring is loose, replace the balancer and all should be fine.
