Hey guys just thought i would tell ya about a race i had today!! A budy i work with just bought a '00 f250 crew bad short bed 6 speed 7.3L powerstroke it has a full 4" exhaust and a cold air intake He has been talking crap about my old beast so today i finally said alright put ur money where your mouth is and lets run them!! At work we have an old road thats down for contruction and it's about ahalf mile long so we said the finish line is the light pole thats close to the middle of it. we lined up and on the 3 horn beep we nailed it i got a horrible start but by the end of second gear(gear i launched from) i was side by side with him i pulled on him in every gear and had him beat by about 4-5 trucks lenghts at the end!!!! He was pist and kept making up excuses like he missed a gear and what not so i siad lets do it again so we did. FIVE times we ran back and fourth and every time i beat him by the 5th time i bet i had 7-8 trucks lenghts on him by the end I just thought i would let u guys know it was great and i'm proud of my old pig
BTW, fill out your sig with the details on this "pig" of yours - be nice to know what kind of turbo you have and what other mods you did to put such a beat-down on that powerstroke (powersmoke, powerjoke, powertoke, whatever it is he wants to call it now)
Bet someones phone is ringing where they sell chips.
Due to the higher base compression ratio, the IDI does have more bottom end torque.
You just have to figure out how to hold them once that Stroke turbo starts to spool.

I had to read that three times before it registered that you mean performance chips for the other guy's PSD! LOL
Funny thing is, it sounds like he wasn't beating him off the line using the low-end grunt, as much as he was once they hit the middle to upper RPM ranges.
Regardless of how he did it, it sounds like he figured out how to hold him even after the PowerSmoke started to spool...
It was a fun time thats for sure and even when the stroke was spooling it didnt feel like i was losing any ground adn i only spool 7 lbs!!! now he's talking about ball bearing turbos, injectors, chips, and all the other upgrades just so he can whoop up on me but the funny thing is i have a third of the money in my truck than he does even before he upgrades it thats fine with me if he wants to spend 5-6K to beat me because i only bought the truck for 5700 lol!!!!!

So he has 3 times the money in his truck that you have in yours already, and since he can't beat you he's going to spend as much on upgrades as you spent for your whole truck. So in the end he'll have 4 times as much invested in his - just to be able to beat your 20 year old truck. LOL
'Course the part that excites me is that even if the upgrades allow his truck to beat yours, you'll still have 95% of his performance for 25% of the money. Now THAT is the part that really warms my heart! That is what I specialize in (and how I got the "Cheaper" part of my name), figuring out ways to build stuff myself that will give me 95% of the performance of an expensive retail version - for 1/2 the money (or less).
Dollar for dollar on mods, an IDI will stay right with a Power Stroke.
But there are many more options for mods on Strokes than there are for IDI engines.
If money were no object, there is no way you can make an IDI run with a Stroke that is modifyed to the max.
But we could buy another truck or two for what they will spend in mods.
Just like they used to say at the speed shops back in the 70's,
"How fast do you want to go?"
"How much money do you have?"
well im glad u guys enjoyed my story i'm glad there is a forum where i can tell a story like that and not hear u guys say " well if he chips it it will beat you" i dont care if he ends up beating me down the road i beat him that day and multiple times that day so i feel proud to be an idi owner!!!!! and i bet if we had all the money and time to mod an idi i bet with all of our minds we could probably find some way to get the compression low enogh to run 30 lbs of boost and have the head bolts hold up we could own powerstrokes all daylong!!! i wish all these magazines would give some credit to IDI's they are always talking about the old cummins and you even hear about the old 6.2 and 6.5 gm diesels, the idi runs way harder than both of them my grandfather has a 92 12V cummins and when we go boating or camping im always waiting on him i'll even pull his 32 fifth wheel while he pulls his 19ft boat and still out run him all day long and get 14-15 mpg and dont even get me started on the old gm dieselsi was going to visit my grandparents in craig,co and you have to go over rabbit ears pass which is steep as heck and i pulled our to let my dogs pee and take a break and a guy in a mid ninety model gmc 2500 6.5 turbo diesel pulling a trailer loaded with hay pulled over to let his engine cool so i was talking with him and he was complaining about how heavy his load was so i asked if he wanted me to pull it over the pass and give his truck a rest, well long story short i ended up pulling it and running faster up the grade then he could empty(and got a full tank of gas out of it) so sorry im just blabbering but i think the IDI is the most over looked diesel ever! I dont care what any of these new diesels can do because mine is paid off and runs like the wind
Most of the magazines do give credit to the 6.9 IDI diesel in a Ford pickup being the reason we have diesel pickups today.
Yes there were other diesels, even some earlier versions.
But the 6.9 was the engine that made it popular with the public.
Everyone forgets their roots, without the 6.9 there probably would not have been a Power Stroke, Duramax or 24 valve Cummins.
i agree dave, nobody where i am knew about an idi till i started driving mine and i have canstantly argued with people that my truck didn't have a chip available for it and everyone is shocked when I say I get 20 mpg (even the dodge guys, most of em around here get 12-18) and i had one of my friends who owend a 97 powerstroke look at my engine, he asked,"what the hell is that?"
