damper install

I'll be ready to put the crank damper back on pretty soon here, but I have a few questions first. I know there is a tool for this but I don't have it, so is there anything else that will work? I looked at the picture of the tool in my shop manual, it looks like it's just a stud and a nut with some kind of spacer. I could probably make one of these, is the damper bolt 5/8"-20??

I'm a big proponent of getting the right tool for the job as opposed to the "bigger hammer" mindset. Having said that however I've never owned a balancer installation tool. The last motor I did, my 400, I simply lubed the balancer bolt threads, applied some anti-seize to the crank snout and used the bolt to pull it on. It went on very smoothly.

The purpose of the tool is to avoid applying undue stress to the crank threads. I'd say that using a long bolt or piece of all-thread with a nut & spacer would work fine. Sorry but I don't know off hand the size & pitch of the balancer bolt. I'd suggest you take it down to the hardware store and match it up.

Well, I got in on. I tapped it on a little ways so I could get enough of the bolt threaded in, then I oiled the threads and used my impact gun to slide it on the rest of the way. I should have it in the truck pretty soon here. Thanks for the help!!
