number one cylinder?

I have a 79 f150 with a 351m. Which side is the number one
cylinder on. My manual says right side front and my brother
says left side front. Could someone who knows the real
answer please help me out.

Thanks
Glenn

Well depending on which way your brother is looking at the engine they could both be correct. Right and left on a vehicle are designated based on normal driving position, i.e. sitting in the driver's seat. The manual is correct from that perspective. If you're standing in front of the truck looking at the engine then your brother is correct. To uncomplicate it a little, remember that the #1 cylinder is on the passenger's side of the truck.

Gee you know what Some 25 yrs. ago I was in High School AutoShop class and my teacher said this one thing that stay in my head to this day. The side of the motor that's closes to the raditor will be your #1 cyl.USUALLY on the passenger side "Except on Pontiac's Motors there on the driver side."
