My truck was previously owned by my best freinds dad ( An offroad mechanic that now works at Boeing ) and this truck is in IMMACULATE shape, im just worried because my last truck ( 92 Dakota that was lifted etc etc ) turned out to leave me stranded and was the worst investment i made. i just dont want that to happen again.
There is a huge difference between a Dakota and an F150. I had a '98 Dakota and it was a POS. Before it hit 20k the entire brake system, exhaust, and A/C had to be replaced, and that was just the major stuff, there was always little stuff going wrong, too. It was a lease and I got so fed up with it always being at the dealer for repairs that I bought the lease out and sold it. Keep the F150 properly maintained and it'll be good for years to come.
What analyst are you talking about? This time last year they said 3 dollars a gallon & it came true
now they are saying 4 dollars a gallon this summer...

30 mpg = $2080 per year
12 mpg = $5200
$5 gallon
30 mpg = $2600
12 mpg = $6500
so in 2 years you might save over $5000 to me and many other people thats a lot of money for house payments groceries, hobbies, anything other than spitting out the exhaust pipe of my f150 getting 12mpg suckin down premium.
Me along with many other people cant afford $150 bucks every week to fill up our f150s... i love my truck but once im done w/ school and starting my career and want to buy a house & start a family there will be more important things than my 4x4... thats why it will be parked except for when it is needed not a daily driver.
Enjoy ur 7.3 I'd love to have it if fuel wasnt so $$$$$$
Depending on the tax and insurance situation where you live vs. miles driven and transportation alternatives, the second (econobox) car could make a lot of sense or make no sense. Like a lot of things, the answer depends on the details.

your math is nice, but unfortunately and diabolically incorrect. You see, you forgot to add that you have to fuel up BOTH vehicles, you forgot the taxes and insurance and registration and maintenence, and any repair costs; not to mention the initial cost of owning the econobox. If you parked your truck and only drove it 7 days out of the year, then your math would be somewhat in the huge ballpark of what it would cost to put gas in the econobox alone.
I put premium in my truck b/c it knocks like crazy with 87 or 89 runs beautifully on 93.
$10k eco box financed for 5 years @ an 4% ish...(dont remember what exactly my jet ski loan was but it was 4% something... i sold it b/c of gas) is a $170 a month payment

+$213 gas @ 4.00/gal 30 mpg 400miles per week

$533.00 per month just for gas for my truck.
So for 10k you can get a really good used car around here. Or you could spend less money. Either way your saving. Tires are cheaper, oil changes are cheaper, windshield wipers are cheaper... everything about the ecobox is cheaper.
You just have to look at your individual situation. If your driving 200 miles per week then unless you get something dirt cheap u can pay cash for your not going to save a ton. But if you drive 400 or 500 or 600 miles per week. You will start saving serious money fast.
Just put the pen to the paper and figure out what works for you.
Its a fantasy to expect "a big gas milage increase" from these Gas Guzzlers. However the V6 does consistantly return better MPG than V8 models.

Realistically a V6 F150 will provide an additional 1-2 MPG over the 4.6 & 2-3 MPG over the 5.4. If you compare models that hold 30 gal that could add 90 miles/tank at the wide end of this spectrum. The narrow end gives 30 more miles/tank. Middle of the roaders can expect 60 more miles/tank. You'd need to judge for yourself if that equates to "a big gas milage increase". Its certainly a very significant increase for most of us.
I know when the 04 gen trucks were launched there was no v6... it was all v8 line up then in 05 or 06 not sure which year they added the v6 back to the lineup.
The V6 is okay for the highway, but when you drive around town and haul anything more than your *** the mpgs of a V6 goes wayyyyy down. Why drive an underpowered truck just to save a few bucks? Just having the power around when you need it is worth any dollar amount I have to pay for fuel. I'll let my fiancee drive the MPG getter, I'll keep my truck. Her Caddy CTS-V with the 425hp LS6 gets in the high 20s for mpg, so we take that on any out of town adventures.
you will lots of mileage out of the 4.6 as long as maintance is kept,... i have 2 of them 97 expedition with 280,000 and a 1999 4x4 F150 with 160,000.....
