i dont think turning out behind rear wheels is a good idea. all the mud you throw goes right on them. lots of weight hanging out there. i turn mine out just in front of the rear wheels. not as much mud gets on them cause you go forward most of the time.
When I installed my exhaust, I Tig welded 6 hanger per pipe, if they fail, I need to quit my job as a welder!!! I would have went to the exhaust shop, but it doesn't take skill to Mig, and i hate how Mig welds look on a finished exhaust system, unless you grind em down then the strength is removed.
On another note, echo chambers are different from resonaters, you won't be able to find a true "echo Chamber" though, they are just exhaust tips. People call them echo chamber because they add an echo to the tone of the exhaust, much like a megaphone. You can get these in different lengths as well as sizes, I have seen em as long as 24" and as big as 4.5" wide, a good rule is to stay within 1" of your exhaust pipe size, much more than that not only looks tacky if you don't get one long enough to tuck up under your truck nicely, but it also makes it more high pitched in the higher rpms.
So if you had a 2.5" system on say a 390, I would suggest running a 2.5 into 3.5" tip that is 18" long, get a good quality tip and have it welded on, it will look better, last longer, and do more for the sound than if it is a clamp on style.
If you really want to get interesting, an old tried and true hillbilly trick I have done on several vehicles, is to drill a hole on either side of your exhaust pipe, somewhere after the muffler and run a piece of bailing wire through and crimp it on either side, leave enough room for it to roll and shift, just keep it from falling out lol. It will add a louder kackle to it when you let off the gas.
If you are wanting a nice nostalgic sound forget about the flowmasters, they are overpriced, and every yuppie from the city runs em. Yes I said Yuppie!! Run cherry bombs. How many true truck enthusiasts, who actually put their vehicle in 4x4 more than just in the winter, have flowmasters on them? I would venture to guess less than 50% of true 4x4ers. Most have some form of glasspack whether it be autozone cheapies, or dynomax etc... Just remember, the length of the glass pack affects the sound you will get.
ok the like its been said before fms are chevy mufflers if you want good LOUD sound go with 12'' glassers its what i run but mine exit in front of the rear wheels sound s awesome!!!!!!
Flowmasters...all the way. It's kind of like apples and oranges though, I don't like a pop or backfire or really loud exaust.....some people do.
I like the low growl and the small sound offered from a flow or another aftermarket supplier.
My truck, unfortunately, still has the exaust that the previous owner installed and thats a glasspack welded to the end of the Y pipe and out into thin air under my cab....Doesn't pop or crackle it's just too loud for my liking. I'll change it over and redo the exaust completely after I decide what I want to do with the engine and all!
I dont think Cherry Bomb makes any glasspacks under 18". I was at the exhaust shop today getting an estimate for sum 18" 2 1/4 Cherry Bomb glasspax. I didnt see any in the book.
hey sapperken..
could you draw up that hillbilly exhaust trick thing. i dont quite understand, but id do it to mine since im going to redo the exhaust soon n e way
For you 6cyl guys.. CHERRYBOMB! no it wont sound Good but its better than stock. It would still be loud. Who knows it might even sound cool. Work with what you got.

This is all well and good for v8s, but what about us poor little I6 guys?
Go ahead with 2.5 pipe and glasspack but mount it kind close to the engine. After the muffler split it and go with a 3-in or 3.5-in dual pipes the rest of the way back. Will sound alot like a mini big rig

Thats a huge pipe for a six cylinder. Kind of wondering if you will have any back pressure at all. To be honest, I don't know if I would go any larger than 2" on both tails and then put a flared tip. JMHO
Go ahead and run the 2-in up to the muffler then jump up the size but the big pipe after the muffler is where the sound is going to change from load noise to that mellow growl that the rigs have as for the pipe size the 4.9 has about the same cylider volume as a 400 V8 I know it has 2 less cylinders but there is still alot of volume there
