I got started working on cars when my dad would have me hand him wrenches way back in the early '60s when the family car was a '60 Rambler. I am pretty sure I knew my fractions (especially 1/2 and 9/16) better than all my friends in Kindergarten and first grade.
I'm pretty good with a lot of things, but the Dana 60 is new to me. Heck, the most I've done with the Timken on my truck was to take all the brake hardware off, clean it up (the truck had sat for 24 years) and replace what needed replacing. The drums are held on with two big honking screws, so I didn't have to go into the bearings like I have to with the Dana.
Since I plan for the Dana axle to be there awhile, I want to make sure I do it all right, so I thought I'd turn to y'all for some advice, because that's why I am a member of FTE!
Grover, I did exactly what redpanhead described when I put the Dana 60 on my truck back together. The procedure worked like a champ.
For the axel nut I got a big 2 3/8 inch socket at Napa. A standard 1/2 inch breaker bar will require an adapter to fit the big socket. I fabricated one out of some old bolts I had laying around.
Yeah, we also had a Rambler back in the '60s. My mom says I was a car nut from my first toy car. Grew up to be a master heavy duty truck mechanic. Got into motorcycles at age 12 and in the '70s got introduce to the Harleys. I'm more of nut about Panheads than anything. Got a '59 F100 because I love the old ugly 4 headlight trucks and want to build a daily driver out it, just don't really like the newer trucks.
When I did my rears, i bought a socket meanont for that. they are quite come, NAPA, some of the big truck parts houses. It was about $23. I tourqed the rear using Eaton specs. The final specks on the jam nut was about 250 ft lbs. If youy need the spec sheet, let me know an i will email it to you.
The rear is somewhat different then regular front bearings. I works on a jam nut basis and must be torqued properly. Unlike the front with a cotter pin as a safety.
ya got it from me grover and no i didnt do it !!!!!! all i did was drive it around the hood and terrorize the neighbours with that truck !!!!!!!!!! it came from a farm down in pawnee and the ol' boy gave it to one of his kids who fixed it to drive it ! now we know what his idea of fixed is ,LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first truck (and the vehicle I learned to drive in) was a '57 F100 Deluxe cab longbed Stepside. I'm pretty fond of that body style, but when I stared looking for a truck several years ago I found my '54 F250 for a good price, and the rest is history.

I wondered how long it would take before you chimed in! Looks like I finally rattled your cage enough.
With good weather coming on and school almost over, I am REALLY looking forward to getting that axle installed.
Have the neighbors forgiven you for the terrorization yet?

I hear you on the clutter!
I have a '63 Mercury wagon I can't seem to get rid of, so I think I'm going to pull the engine out - a perfectly good 390 - and take the rear end off and THEN we're going to have a car bash or something of the sort.
That old car's been kind of an albatross, and frankly I'll be glad to see it go.
what shape is she in grover ? the wagon that is ?? ifyou are interested in being the owner of a 49 f-4 , and i can e mail pics to ya to prove it's not a pos , i might be interested in it if yer up for a trade . been looking for a later model old more door or wagon preferably , and i got fe stuff sitting here . i got 3 going on 4 grandkids who rather enjoy riding around in my old stuff .... so whatcha think ??

The wagon is a '63 Colony Park, which was a nine passenger car. I has or at least had the optional seatbelts (I think I took them out for my Comet some years back, but I'll have to check). It has dealer (under dash) air conditioning, but when I got the car back in the '80s the compressor was dead, and I've never done anything about it. The fan works, however.
The engine is actually a '72 2-bbl unit, which means it's lower compression and can run on pump gas. I put the original 4-bbl intake on it, frankly because I happen to like the Ford 4-bbl. WHen I bought the engine I took it apart and replaced a few things that needed replacing. I also installed a Cobra Jet windage tray that I had had in the car's previous engine.
It's white with the obligatory fake wood trim and chrome roof rack. I think it was repainted at least once in its life before I got it. The interior is red. The upholstery is all original, and not in too bad shape. The third row seat cushions are in the best shape probably because they've almost never been used. The carpet is dying, particularly on the passenger side.
Now the bad parts: There is rust on the tailgate behind the aluminum trim panel, and the (electric) tailgate window only works when the stars and planets are in the right positions. The starter is gone because I took it off and put it on Grover. (An FE starter DOES work on a Y-block, but it's a bear to install that top bolt!) There is some rust in the rear quarter panels. The front right fender is a bit bent, along with the bumpre, from a minor fender-bender it was involved in before I bought it. For some reason, the car eats brake boosters. I've been through three of them on that car, which is one of the reasons I quit messing with it. I'm sure there's a logical reason for it, but I couldn't figure it out.
I put 15" rims on the back, and I can't remember what I did with the original rear rims. That's a pretty minor problem, though.
If you're interested in it, I'd love to see you have the car. I don't think it will take much to get it on the road. My wife hates the car, so she got pretty good at puting up roadblocks between me and getting it driveable.
The problem is, I don't know what I'd do with a '49 F-4. I don't think I could convince my duaghter that it's really a Ranchero.
Glad I'm not the only one who has it "bad". Matter of fact reading stuff like this makes me feel pretty good. I can't wait to line'em all up in the backyard and take a pic.
