Im looking at buying a used Holley 600cfm, with vacume secondaries, and electric choke. It was off of a 1971 Mach 1 with a 351C. The only problem was that it leaked. The rebuild kit it with it though. What are these carbs like, and how much should I pay for one????
Sorry, i suppose I should supply some more info.. I have a Rebiult 400
Comp Cams Magnum 270H(.519Int&Exh,224Int&Exh@0.050,110Lobe Sep)
Ohio FlatTops
Stock Heads w/ 3 angle valve job
Wieand Stealth Intake
Also, what kind of Compression would these pistons make. I'm guessing about 9.0->9.5:1 correct??? Also, does anyone have Desktop Dyno 2000, that they could run this through
I like Holleys. When you rebuild it, don't take every little thing apart on the carb. Take the choke assembly off as a unit and take the major sections apart and put everything that is not plastic, in lacquer thinner. Lube o-rings before they go back in and it should work good. Ok edelbrock guys. It's your turn.
hey skud,
gotta say that is a pretty good carb however there are a few things you may want to know about them. They are very well known for blowing the power valve, easy to replace though. you should get a protector for it if you buy it and you should put a new power valve in it before you even put it on. reasons being if the power valve is blown you will be very disappointed in the way the card makes your vehicle run. So if I was you I would spend the 10 bucks it cost and replace it before you put it on.
this is comming from experence with my holley 600 and it is not to old. what happens is during a backfire through the carb it burns it out and it only takes once. but a good carb and very easy to tune.

Check the throttle shaft on the left side to see if it's worn out/loose. That part causes a vacuum leak and is expensive to repair. Make sure the base plate is flat and not cracked.
check secondary metering plate mounting surface.older 1850 600 carbs have a tendancy to hairline crack and cause internal leak, had this happen after second rebuild. holley makes good carbs, but the 1850's have had so many "corners" cut to simplify and lower costs that they dont last long. edelbrock 600 works great for street, or even new street avengers, just dont expect alot from the 1850 600.
