Fusible links

Hello electrical guru's, my question is can a fusible link be replaced with an inline fuse? My 1983 F150 has some questionable looking wiring by the starter solenoid (the 16 gauge orange wire) and I was wondering what would be the best way to replace it. Thanks for any help.

The advantage of fusible links are they can withstand higher amp draws for longer periods of time. You can use an inline fuse but on a solinod it will probably blow if starter turns very long. Look HERE and HERE and HERE for info and replacement links. You can also get them from most local parts stores. Just be sure you use the same length and size as original.

You can use fuses. The first big question no one can answer is what value fuse matches each fusible link? I have never seen an offical chart or anything, so what you can do is guess at the loads, and also go by the size alternator you have.

Generally speaking, the fuses to replace the fusible links are going to be very large. In the neighborhood of 60, 70 up to 100 amps. So you will have to use maxi fuses. If you look at the newest vehicles, a lot of them have gotten away from the fusible links, and have large maxi fuses in a underhood fuse box.

So if you have a 60 amp alternator, I would use at least a 60 amp fuse at the main fusible link at the starter solenoid connection.

zx250 ~ thanks for the links they were very helpful

Franklin2 ~ that's a good point about what size of fuse would work, I hadn't thought about that. I think I will probably just replace it with a new fusible link just to be safe.
