I just got a new front bumper (see my pancaked thread) and I just noticed there is a capped electical plug sticking out just beside the license plate above the tow hook. It must have been hidden behind the old bumper. Is this for a block heater? I did not know I had this. Where in the block would the heating element be installed so I can look for it to confirm?
It will most likely be installed in one of the holes where a freeze plug goes in the engine block. Just follow the cord and see where it goes. An engine bock heater can be a wonderful thing to have during cold weather, especially if your truck sits outside. Not only does the engine start more easily, you have heat from the heater and for the defrosters much more quickly. When I had one, I would turn it on as soon as I got up. By the time I was ready to leave for work, the windshield was starting to defrost.
May be I'm wrong but 3.0 starts very well in below zero temperatures conditions. I had to start my old aero when it was -35 dgr C outdoors. ICE AGE! I think no reason to install block heater ore auxially coolant heater, like webasto DW80....
The real winter problem is that we live usually in 5-20 miles far from work and driving cold car/truck especially van we have cold coolant that can not heat interior. That's why I'd like to install inside cabine air heaters, like Webasto AT2000 ore Eberschpaher DLC.
Yea, I had a Subaru Outback that had one and used it all the time. You got in and like it was all warmed up in 2 minutes. I've had this truck for 3 years and did not know I had this!!!! And since the cars take the garage, it gets relegated to outside. I might make a summer project to run an underground power line and install a "hitching post" with the outlet next to where it parks.
So I used my engine block heater last night for the first time. With 6 inches of snow coming, I figured it would be a good test. Well this morning, I look out and all the snow on the hood has slid off due to the heat coming up from the engine and warming the hood roof. I start the truck and immediately I have warm defrost and interior. This is definitely a sweet feature to have on the truck up here.
