I put a Melling hi volume oil pump, oil pump shaft and standard size main bearings from AutoZone in a stock 351m and it pegs the Stewart Warner oil pressure guage out past 100 lbs. When it gets hot it sets at about 85 lbs. of pressure. I have never seen a hi vol. pump hold this much pressure. This is supposed to be a high volume not a high pressure pump. Is anyone else running this pump? Is this normal for this pump? Is this too much pressure?

 

Don't worry there is nothing wrong with your pump. I have the same pump in my 70 cleveland and it does the same thing only I am running auto meter sport comp gauges. I would only imagine with the pump pushing more oil faster that it is building incredible pressure also.

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

 

I actually saw the same thing on my new rebuild with a "stock" style pump. After a while it eased up. I think it indicates really tight clearances. (It's a good thing)I just wouldn't hammer on it till it loosens up a little. Keep an eye on the gauge for a while when it's cold incase you might snap the oil drive shaft.
