engine temp gage

The stock eng. temp gage, is it worth anything ? Mine seems to work, but with anything orig. I have my doubts...
Can a real temp sensor be hooked to the orig. gage so I'm sure of the readings or what ?
The truck is in my sig. all stock except for whats there...
Thanks

The guage is only a fancy IDIOT light. If it goes to the hot mark, its too late.

get real gauges if you want to know for sure. the one that freaks me out is the oil pressure. The factory one never really moves, but in reality, the oil pressure goes up and down a lot.

They look nice but I don't think I could keep up with numbers flashing by while WOT. Heck it is hard enough to keep my eyes on the road and look at the needles. But I know where i'm at with the needles moving.

So what your saying is get a 3 gage pillar and do the oil, temp and tranny temp ?
Or can the oil and temp in dash gages be used with the proper
sensors ?
My engine is stock so I don't need the pyro etc..
Isopro...?

You don't need one only if you don't tow or haul anything heavy.

I say- better get the basics covered, that way you won't be kicking yourself when PMS kicks in.

take a look at my gauge setup in my gallery.

Go with separate gauge. It will save you a lot of time and/or money and most likely be more reliable.

i just bought one today, monitors everything your truck has a sensor for and can record i believe for 60 seconds so you can go back and look at things. It reads and clears DTC's as weel, even monitors your HPOP! They are also working on an upgrade so it can do cylinder contribution testing and things of the like. I also have a set of dipricols/tranny/egt/boost.

incorrect I've run mine hot a few times over doing it (pulling my backhoe) and it will run about four to five needles width over where it sits most of the time and I ran it close to the red climbing fancy gap in virginia.

The simple answer is no. You'd have to find sensors that would work for the voltage in the dash, and I'm not sure where to find that information.

The oil pressure gauge is controlled simply by a switch. The oil pressure sensor in the HPOP res is just a switch that sends the signal to the dash gauge. At 7psi+, the gague reads normal, below 7psi, it reads zero. Doesn't really serve a point IMO.

I've never had the factory temp gague move past normal either. I do have Autometer gauges that read temp as well, so I know what's really happening. At ~ 160-180 degrees of water temp, the factory gauge will read normal, and mine just sits there all the way up to a highest temp of 210* that I've seen. I'd hate to know just how hot it was getting if the factory temp guage actually moves higher than normal.
