Is it a Dually? 4x4? why would you want the higher gears? You'll obviously need the new ring and pinion and possibly a new carrier, depending on what gear manufacturer you're getting. It's usually a shop job and it'll cost around $1000, parts included.
I have pondered giving up my 3:73 gears on my '06 F-350 diesel for more low end starting power. If you pull with your truck, and starting loads is an issue, I wouldn't give up the lower gear ratio. Poor mileage stinks, but not being able to pull really, really, stinks!!! I am only getting 14 mpg with my single axle and the 3:73.
Sheesh, 12.4 with a dually sounds pretty good. I really don't think with a 3.73 you're going to do a whole lot better, but if it makes you feel better, more power to you. You should take it to a shop and get an estimate on the price there. The parts alone are gonne be around 400 - 700 dollars (if I remember correctly).
You could do a test first. Find a set of taller tires to bolt on and run a few tanks of fuel to see what the mileage does. There is a tire/gear calculator out there to see what size tire will equal what gear and to calculate the miles also.
