What Gear Do I have?
I don't tow alot. I currently am running 265/75/16 tires. I am looking at replacing the tires and may want to go to 285/75/16. What is the best gear to run for this size tire?
This truck has 150k and runs like a clock. Mileage is 11-12 mpg. I am hoping that a larger tire might lower the rpms and pickup 1-2 mpg.
What is your thought?
Here are the codes:
Axle Type
31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
32 — 4.10 non-limited slip, F-250
C2 — 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
33 — 4.30 non-limited slip, F-250
C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
36 — 4.56 non-limited slip, F-250
C6 — 4.56 limited slip, F-250
As far as tire size is concerned...IMO...if you are happy with 11-12mpg, then leave it alone. The only thing adding a larger tire will do is use more fuel. The larger size tire adds weight and rolling resistance.
Since the V10 loves to rev in the upper RPM range...most post that 4.30 gears are the best all-around gears with the stock OEM tires. But with the LT285...and 3.73...you could get away with it if you go with 4.30 gears. The gear swap (if 4x4) will cost about $1500-$2000.
Hope that helps...
