I have what i am almost positive is an out of balance driveshaft.
I put the truck on the lift today and ran it in 3rd gear at about 35mph. The driveshaft had a visible runout in the middle. It seemed to be very slight, but i could see it pretty easily with the naked eye. maybe 1/16".
There aren't any weights on the driveshaft to speak of. The belhousing has a crack working its way around and the truck has a vibration that turns to a harmonic, then back to a normal vibration according to vehicle speed.
So i am going to see about getting the driveshaft inspected and balanced, but there are very few places around here that do that, i don't trust shops at all these days.
Does anyone know of any place i can simply order a new driveshaft for a 71 SWB 302/c4?
I had a friend who knocked off a driveshaft weight (non-ford). We put a radiator hose clamp on the shaft, just kept adjusting it and road testing. After about 20 miles and 20 or so adjustments the driveline vibrations were gone. The clamp stayed on for years.
It may be especially helpful because i need to drive about 45 minutes to the driveshaft place tomorrow. I just put in new motor mounts and tranny mount too, and don't want to ruin them in one day because i was antsy.
Thanks for the help guys, i'll let you know how it all works out!
Bent shaft will not damage the new mounts. Sometimes they can straighten the bent shaft but most likley they will replace the bent tube, re-balance the shaft and install new U-joints. You should be good to go for years after this.
Well i was there all day waiting for my girl, they had to cut the old shaft out and weld a new section in. Cost me a pretty penny but i didn't over pay, they are good over there.
RI Driveshaft. I will give them my business again. I'm sure i will need to have the driveshaft shortened when i redo the engine/tranny scenario in the truck.
Truck drives smooth as glass now. She just rolls on down the highway with a quiet hum.
2 yrs ago I had the complete (4WD) rear shafts built new. Everything was wore out including the slip yoke and seals. Doesnt take much on a driveshaft/u-joints to get a vibe.
