ok i bout a 2004 ford f150 extended cab 2 weeks ago and last weekend i was on my way up north and i hear this weird humming noise coming from somewhere up front. well it only last for like a sec or two and dies out. well it did it three time that day. it does it everyonce in a while in the morning only. but when i drove last weekend it did it 2.5 hours in to a trip up north. well yesterday on my way to work it did it a lot. i cant really explain the noise but its just a humming type noise. it would do it for a sec or two and stop and come back a minute later and go off and so on for like 10-15 minutes prolly did it a total of 20 times. should i be worried? should i take it to the dealer? the dealer i got it from is a half hour away and dont wana take it there for them to tell me its nothing or they dont know. it only really happends in the morning.
sounds to me like it might be your hubs (if its a 4wd), try shifting into 4 high next time it makes the noise and see if that makes it go away. Good luck!
I have a 04 explorer that's had a high pitched whine on cold days ever since I bought it. It comes and goes based on specific RPM's. I've come to the conclusion that it's the crankshaft pulley singing out with a minor imbalance or roughness in the engine brought on by the cold. When you said you went up north, and it did it in the morning only, I started to think your truck has the same issue. Ford thought I was nuts, but I brought them a video of it doing it and they still said they couldn't find any problems.
well im no mechanic but if it was the altenator wouldnt my battery be toast by now? i cant really see it being the hubs but once again im not a mechanic cause i mean it only does it in the morning except last weekend when i went up north. its like a high pitch humming noise. can this be a bad thing? cause i found out after i bought my truck from this ford dealer a guy from my work bought a f350 and they put a thicker oil in it to reduce the engine knock and when he changed it he put the regular oil in and his motor went not to long after that. should i get this checked out. could my motor be going? i have no clue where to begin.
Check out some threads on whinning alternators...mine does it when it's real cold, once it warms up it's fine, doesn't effect my battery and I believe they came out with a revised alternator to fix the whine...
Sounds like the infamous alternator problem to me. For whatever reason, the alternators just make noise. I haven't heard of anybody on here with noisy alternator syndrome who alt. quit working based on the noise alone. Just an annoyance really.
I get a loose plastic buzz in the wiper trans shroud sometimes. It happens on cold days after I've got it iced up. Then on a warm day I remove and reassemble it correctly and it stops buzzing at idle in drive.
Does the plastic buzz come from near the windshield? Is it only when the vehicle is in Drive, but stopped, and when the engine is cold? I think I have the same problem.
I would start with the alternator. I had the same problem a little over 1 year ago and it was the alternator. I had it replaced while still under warranty with the newer model and it was fixed.
