The Firestone Destination M/T's have rave reviews both at tirerack.com and offroaders.com.
I wasnn't looking at mud tires, but now I might consider those. Supposedly they're excellent in the snow. I just wish they weren't $766 for a set (from tirerack, 285/75R16)
Actually, I was going to post about those tires tonight!
I just put a set of
Maxxis LT235/75R15 MT-762 BigHorns 6PR 104/101Q OWL M+S Mud Terrain (all that from the sticker) on my Bronco II today.
Cost delivered from E-Bay $453!
Like a "real" snow tire, this one can be studded. This was the most aggressive LT235 I could find (I might still go with green diamonds for winter if I head up north). It has between 15/16 and 1" space between the shoulder lugs and center lugs so it should clean easily and pack the snow for traction. Depth is about 1/2". Stands 28.50" tall mounted on a 15" x 6 rim.
I took it "slightly" off road in my back 40 testing it in some shallow mud and driving through wet leaves going uphill, where other AT tires forced me to go 4x4. A little wheel spin, but, they dug in about 3" and I was able to get up the hill in 2x4.
I hope to be pulling a trailer and skidding some logs off road this weekend with the B2 and to give the tires a good workout.
They do have a louder then normal hum on the highway.
I was going to balance these with BBs, but, my tire spoon from Northern Tools started to bend and ripped a small amount of the bead so I gave up and took them to a shop. Very stiff bead, which is a good thing, same with the humming, means it is a real mud tire. Plus, Maxxis is a GA company!
