I have a 1977 400 its a rebuilt with 4-5K on it, I want to put some 10:1 pistons in it, will I have to have the crank reground etc etc ?? I was thinking I should just lift the engine , pull the oil pan, heads, and just loosen rod bolts etc... also , would I need to put new rings???

No need to regrind the crank unless there's something wrong with it now. If you have it ground, you'll need to replace the bearings on the ground journals to maintain correct clearance.
You could change the pistons using the method you describe, but it would be a heck of a lot easier with the engine on a stand.
If you change the pistons, you should use new rings recommended by the piston manufacturer for your pistons.
About those Badger pistons, they are really only 9.0-9.1:1. See my other reply on the "performance 400" topic.
to get 10:1 you have a lot of reasearch to do. first the cheapest way is get 351c pistons and bush the connecting rods. get a cr calulator, the deck height on a 400 is .0565 that is rather large and will eat up the cr of all pistons, a 351c piston will lose cr if put in a 400. buy some books on ford perfromance and swaping of parts. or you can have custom pistons made for a large fee

I went that route about 20 years ago. I had 9.5:1 pistons made by an outfit called Jahns (not sure on the spelling) and I recall paying about $500 for the set.
