Rusty Radiator
Rusty Radiator
The Radiator In My 1950 F-1 Has Just Been Recored. However After About 200 Miles The Water Is Dark Red Rust. I Have Tried Flushng It Out, But It Always Returns. Any Idea Of An Additive Or Anything I Can Do. Thanks Bill
probably the same thing as mine . the flatty was full of sh-- from sitting so long with some real weak water / anti freeze mix in it . i finally got it cleaned out just in time to take mine { radiator } in to be fixed / and now recored . it took me the better part of a month of flushing it with chemicals / and water to get it cleaned out . it had me concerned for awhile !!!! i cant wait to start the 49 and see what kinda crud it dumps out !!!!!!!!!
I posted this once before somewhere. I had my water pumps off and ran one of those magnatized recovery tools in my block. I kept getting slag and little casting debri out of my block. I was amazed it had been in my 49 all those years.
If you ever have it down for pumps it would pay to try that.

Check with your local automotive supply for a radiator anti-rust and water pump lubricant. It comes in a 12 ounce can or plastic bottle. I keep two cans in my radiator all the time. It turns the water milky white but helps contain rust. I also use nothing but distilled water in my radiator. Most tap water contains high concentrations of iron (rust). If your engine has a lot of rust in it you might need to drain and refill the radiator annually for a few years until it is all cleared out...
