Coolant Leak

This has just happened within the last few days, living in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, I use the block heater, now it leaks coolant just above it, corner of the head and the block, its a steady drip, only when the block heater is pluged in. There is only 37,000 miles on this truck, I don't drive it in the winter months, but I had to this year, going to the dealer is like going to the dentist for a root canal, we are not on friendly terms, normal driving it doesn't leak, looking for suggestions.

Sounds like possible egr cooler/oil cooler leak. Check the orange hose to the left of the oil filter on top of the engine.

Look at your degas bottle and see if there are signs of "puking". This is when the coolant escapes from the bottle. You will see white stains like in the pic below:

Familar with that problem, the leak is somewhere on the backside of the head on the passinger side of the truck, added another quart of coolant tonight, plugged in the heater, no leak, but it is 20 degrees warmer tonight, the problem continues.

It is likely the frost plug on the back of the passenger side head. I have heard of several instances where that was an issue.

I had that same problem. it only leaked when it was cold and the engine was not running. it seemed to leak on the passenger side coming off the back of the motor. it was the little two inch hose that is under the intake manifold that connects the EGR cooler to the manifold for coolant supply. i didn't mind doing the work myself, it was a good time to do the EGR delete and CCV reroute.

i hope this helps

Tippmann... the "puking" out the degauss bottle. Is this a sign of trouble or a common thing with this motor?

Yesterday I pulled in my yard after 15min drive home from work and could smell antifreeze. Opened the hood and seen signs of leakage on the top of bottle but at this time it was comming out the bottom hose on the degauss bottle. I opened the top and let the pressure bleed off and leak stopped.

Is this a sign of HG going bad?

It was for mine. I just had my headgaskets replaced from the same issue. Unless you had to much coolant in the reserve?

It is a sign of the HG's going bad. If you reset the cap, and it doesn't happen anymore, than you should be fine. Otherwise, it may be time to go to the dealer to have a pressure test done to see if your HG's are bad.........

"Degauss"? That's what happens to your picture tube monitor, a quick hard shot of magnetic field to obliterate residual magnetics that may happen to "stick" to some portions of the phosphorous display. It wipes the display face clean of residual magnetic fiels.

"Degas" is what's happening in this bottle. The coolant gets aerated as it gets pumped and plumbed around the engine. The last step of it's "path" is to dump out into this bottle, where any aeration has an opportunity to bubble up out of "suspension in the fluid".

Sorry, just hear "Degauss" one too many times.

I think I have the same thing. Had a "puking" event a few moths ago. It just happened again today. What does the job usually cost for head gaskets. I may as well get head bolts too. Any ideas would be helpful.

I assume you mean head studs. The studs cost about $400. The HG costs around $200 on ebay. To have it done at the dealer, the labor costs are usually more than $3,000 if it's not done under warranty.
