400 Blocks

How hard are these blocks to find? Are they pretty rare? Where is my best chance of getting one, and out of what? How much on average? The only thing I am concerned about is the Crank, and the rods really. I know a 351 C Crank, and rods are SUPERB stock pieces, are the 400's as retuable? I am thinking of making a 400 Cleveland into a 1/4 race motor, that will make 11:1 compression on pump gas. Right now I have a 351 C that has the same. I am gonna take my 4v QUENCH style heads, and put them on the 400 Block. This is what a friend on another site has told me. Thanks Morgan!!

One of the things to consider when using a 400 block is that with standard Cleveland or 400 deck height pistons they will end up down the hole between .050 and .070 at TDC. If you use aussie or 4V quench heads the large deck height will render the quench area ineffective. To correct this the 400 block must be decked between .050 and .070. The stock configuration dished pistons with a zero deck height and quench heads with .040 head gasket will make about 10 to 1 compression, but since the quench area will work properly with that combination it should run on pump premium without problems. Flat tops with that combination will increase the compression ratio to approximately 11.5 to 1 compression.

So this is my goal. I figure that with this motor, I will not have to spin it as high to get my power. Power now is estimated via DESK TOP DYNO at 515 HP @ 6500 RPMs and 455 ft/lbs of torque @5000 RPMs. I hope that these numbers will shoot over 600 HP and 500 ft/lbs. I know my intentions are VERY differant than most everyone here intention with a motor, but What does everyone here think is obtainable with the extra 49 Cubes?? This is all just a fantasy if the motor will not run on PUMP GAS 91 octane @ approx 11:1.

400 Blocks

400 blocks are easy to get, because no one wants them. They don't know what they will do if built right. I got mine free. I had mine bored +.030 and installed flattop pistons. I used 351C-4V open chambered heads. I figure about 10.3:1 CR. My dyno-simulator puts it at about 430 HP with my Cam and Intake and Headers. It pings slightly on 92 Octane, if the engine temp gets above 180 degrees. Otherwise it is fine.

Remember to use hardened valve seats to allow for the unleaded gas.

The heads are already 100% rebuilt. Hardend seats. How far did you mill the block to get those heads on it with a 10:1 Compression Ratio?
