So far I have changed all the fluids, pretty much a tune up. I dumped in injector cleaner in my tank.
Ive taken off the air breather and cut out that restriction on it, ive cleaned the CVR Valve.
ARe there any other things besides getting a turbo, turning up the pump, and the exhaust I can do to make performance better?
Ive thought about doing the air intake but I really dont want to do any chopping on my truck around the radiator or lights to get room to be able to get air from the outside. Could i buy a cold air intake or something for it instead of making something? Id kind of like having the dual air intake.
There was one settup you could buy that went to the firewall drivers side.... it used windshields/cowling air pressure to assist, forced air intake. Name escapes me.. Sorry
Check out my gallery- ram air from behind the grill to a big air scoop over the battery, I have measured 3 times the air pressure in that scoop set up over the stock one at 50 mph. Only cut out some of the plastic cowling behind the headlight.
From your description of what you DON'T want to do for more intake air, it sounds like you have already looked at my gallery, Dave's gallery, and KJLYPW's gallery.
FWIW, the cosmetics of the mods I did the lights to install my dual ram air can be reversed as simply as replacing the headlight bezels. The only part not as easily reversable are the holes in the fender liners - and even those can be covered with a couple of squares of black plastic and a pop rivet gun (or a few sheetmetal screws)
FWIW, Even the Hypermax cowl induction requires some cutting of the firewall IIRC.
Ain't nothin' free my friend, and mod parts for these trucks are few and far between. Gotta' either choose your poison or live with what Ford gave ya'...
Would there be anyway to fabricate an intake to run up under the truck like in front of the oil pan? I really dont want to do a whole bunch of cutting. The way you guys did your jobs are very creative. Maybe I could take a few of your plans and put them together. I like the idea of Cheaperjeepers double intake, maybe if I could take that and run hte end for the outside air up under the truck, or maybe in between the radiator and the grill, if there is room. I dont know yet, guess I will have to just get out there and start trial and error. Thanks for showing me your designs and your input.
true, I look at the setup that kjlypw and think thats probably the setup I may attempt but maybe with the dual hoses like cheaperjeeper has. The only problem I see with kjlypw is that his is on a i believe 1992 truck and mine is a 1985, isnt there differences in the hood and grill area? I think on the 1987 and newer there is more area in between the morot and hood compared to the 85 and earlier models. Am I correct? Could i possibly do the setup just like kjlypw.
Also kjlypw I see you used a mold to make the intake, I have experience in fiberglass, I worked in it for two years but I would like to know how you went about making the mold? As mine will probably be the same diameter as yours, with the possible differences in the hood to engine room.

Thanks guys
Yeah, I looked at doing a dual setup like KJLYPWs myself, but the differences in the hood and grille pretty much killed the idea for me. On my 86, the underside of the hood pretty much sits right down on the filler panel between the grille and radiator support. I'd really like to be able to do something like that now on my turbo truck, but the same problem applies since it is an 86 too.
I thought about installing the scoops below the bumper, but on my old 2WD I was afraid it would be too low and end up scooping too much water. That would be less of a concern on my 4x4, since it sits so much higher, BUT, doing a dual on it is nearly impossible since adding a second intake snorkle onto the Banks airbox assembly would be a LOT more difficult than with the stock air cleaner.
I'm probably going to end up doing something about like Dave's setup - though it rains so much here I'm afraid that a straight shot from the grille to the airbox could result in a hydro-locked engine. In my area, having at least one bend in the intake - even though it decreases the efficiency of the ram-air-effect is still a good idea to keep water out.
I'm starting to think the Hypermax cowl induction may be the better answer for me....
Does anyone have a picture of the Hypermax cowl induction installed in there truck, to give me a better perspective.
Im not against your setup, im just not up to the having holes in my lights like that. Maybe I could set it up underneath my truck. Could I put a filter like on a cold air intake on it to make sure water wont get it? Or would it be to much restriction on it?
