i baught a 91 explorer for my brother and it needs some work... first off its bin overheating and i found out the fan aint workin.. soi got a flex a lite one for it.. but cant get this stock one off.. i took the 4 pulley bolts off and fan aint moving.. now is it just seized and i need to pry it? or is there more bolts im missing?? i did buy a haynes manual but theres nothin in there about removing the fan.. thanx for any help
The fan is bolted to the water pump shaft. You have to remove the big nut that holds the fan to the water pump. Autozone borrows out a tool that will hold the water pump pulley still (if you reattach the four bolts for the water pump pulley) while you loosen the big nut. All 4.0's that I've see have a normal right hand threaded nut for that big nut, but check the fan shroud to make sure.

i kinda thought thats how it worked.. ok ill try to put the bolts back on and remove the bit fan nut.. the truck doesnt have a shroud.. guess last ouwner must of broke it or somthin. so the fan bolt is standard thread? or opposite? ritghy tighty lefty loosey? or the other way around? thanx alot for ur help
The bolt should be standard thread - righty-tighty. Is the old fan broken, which is causing it to overheat? Also, the missing shroud may also cause overheating problems.
That missing shroud will have a very adverse effect. I had a Mazda truck that had a damaged shroud, and the truck would always climb to the middle of the temp range when I was idling in slow traffic. When I got the shroud replaced, the temp dropped significantly. The shroud makes sure that the air flows through the radiator. Without the shroud, the fan is eneffective.
yes the old fan is not working.. i watched it from a cold start till the temp gauge hit A on normal, then shut it off.. the new fan i picked up was cheap so gona change it either way.. the old one also was starting to crack.. i had a bad experience with fan blades going thro my rad years ago. i also agree that the shroud makes a differnce.. i found some local guys around here that wrecked there trucks so gona do some part searching on there trucks. thanx for the help
