Well I finally got time to pull my motor out of my truck today. I went to switch my flexplate and flywheel over to the other motor I'm putting in, and the holes wouldn't all line up. I could get bolts in 4 of the 6 holes. With the other two, only half of the hole in showing. The engine that I pulled out that has the flywheel on it is a 351M. The engine I'm putting in is a 400. Thats what the guy said that I bought it from but it may be a 351. I need to find the right flywheel from a junkyard I guess but is there a difference between the 351 and 400 flywheels? I really don't know what is going on here. My truck is a 78 F-150 4x4 with a C6. Could someone please clue my in? Thanks.
Both 351M and 400 use the same flywheels and flex plates.
Which holes aren't lining up? The ones from the flexplate to the crankshaft? If it's those, try rotating the flexplate around some. The holes on the crank are not evenly spaced, so it'll bolt up only in the correct orientation for the external balance.
More trivia than anything else, I know that here (aus) where 302 clevelands were also sold, (essentially a de-stroked 351C, in the same way a 351M is a de-stroked 400), the flywheel and starter motor is different to the 351C. As such it wouldnt surprise me if the flywheel is different.
