Preparing Motor For Starting

I just aquired a 1979 F-250 with a 351m, 5.8L engine. It hasn't run for two years. I'm wanting to know what I need to do before trying to turn it over. I've been advised to remove the spark plugs and squirt some WD-40 into the cylinders before attempting to turn it over, but would like to know if this is a good idea and whether I could add brake fluid instead. What all should I consider to prepare this motor for running?

taking the spark plugs out when you first crank the motor is a good idea if you suspect that there is water in any of the bores; otherwise you could end up with a bent conrod. not sure about the wd40 though.

Thank you for the response. I'll definetely do that then since I don't know the answer. I'm trying to minimize any damage I might cause, and I've heard rust can readily form on the cylinder walls.

Okay, I've been scanning articles, and there are several solvents apparently that can be used for freeing up gummed lifters and valves.

Since my 351m hasn't been run in over two years, I'm concerned about scoring the cylinders and what not. Is there more to think about (other than removing plugs) or is this a relatively non-issue where I throw in a new battery, pour some gas down the carb and see what I got?

Thanks for the advice! I pulled the plugs (breaking two they were ### to get out)and squirted some marvel mystery oil in, mixed some in the new oil change, and some here and there. Put in a new battery, sprayed a little carb cleaner and voila she started up. Smoked a bit, but that cleared in a few minutes. Even drove it over with serious shuddering to my brothers until I'll scope out all the problems. Thanks again!
