F-1 steering trouble

Hello,
I own a few F-1 trucks, I guess you could say I like the older sister, but I actually got the younger one. Ha ha

Alright...I have a 50 Ford truck with roughly 4" of steering wheel play. I have owned these trucks for several years, and need to bounce off someone. Should I just get a rebuilt steering box or buy the parts. Problem is I do not know if the sector shaft gear is bad, or the the steering gear shaft is bad. Any ideas?

Might want to mention the truck is for my 16 year old son, and I have a business trip to go on in the near futur ( its a year long trip).

thanks

Do the Toyota swap, even swapping to the manual Toyota Box would probably be better than stock. Do a search in the Forum, we even have a Tech Article on it floating around.

Will the toyota box work on the older models? I have heard folks using them on 55s and up but never on 52 and lower. I would imagin it has something to do with the ball style drag link as compared to todays style tapered tie rods. I could use the help and thanks for the info. I will muddle through the sight and see if I could find the tech article. thanks

Is there any take-up left? There is a locknut on a bolt - located on the exhaust manifold side of the steering gearbox. Loosen the lock nut and with the front axle on jack stands and the steering wheel in the dead middle, turn the adjustment bolt clockwise until it makes contact. It's pulling the sector gear into the worm gear. Hopefully this works for you, but most of these have already been over adjusted and have no takeup left.

It's in the neighborhood of $200-300 for a repair kit and upwards of $600 for a rebuilt box if you don't want to do it yourself.

The DIY kit requires grinding the weld or pinch off the sector roller axle and welding the new roller/axle in place, replacing the worm and or steering shaft along with bearings, felt, etc.

A new/rebuilt gearbox works wonders. Replace worn tierod ends, draglink parts, kingpins, etc and the truck will steer like new. I did the above to my 48 and I can tell you the toyota box isn't necessary. If you decide to swap your's hang on to it cause the hotrodders snap them up. The gemmer 3 box you have is desired for many projects...............jmo
