Hi,
I had a new ignition key programmed a week ago by a local Ford dealership. When I went to start the truck (2004 FX4; 25,000 miles) after it sat for a week, the truck battery was dead. I hadn't had any battery problems prior to having the key made. The weather hasn't been exceptionally cold. The battery is the original that came with the truck. Could programming the ignition key have had anything to do with draining the battery? Thanks.
I think it's more just an issue of the truck sitting for a week. So, it's a 2004 with only 25K miles on it? Your battery is close to 4 years old and with the low mileage, the truck either sits a lot or used for short trips. So the battery never gets fully charged. Have you had any issues since then with the truck not starting? I would to start thinking of replacing the battery in the near future as an added sense of security.
I dont think the key being made had anything to do with it. As stated before, the battery is four years old and seeing the obviously little use the truck gets, it was on its way out anyway. Just replace it and move on. Maybe trickle charging while the truck sits will help save the alternator a little as well.
As far as the battery being dead. Since the battery is 4 years old it is a good idea to replace it and probably just a total coincidence as far as your key being reprogrammed.

Some of the earlier models have had "Starter Terminal Fatigue".
If it helps... my '05 had problems starting after sitting about 4-7 days. It showed the "signs" of a dead battery, but a careful check (myself and dealer) over this TSB https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...p?tsb=06-19-14 found us a solution.

Maybe this will help and...
Welcome to Ford-Truck Enthusiasts!
I was wondering about that, or something similar to that. My kid had a Toy car that had that very problem.
You have anything hooked up to the 12V outlets? Like an ipod? My outlets don't turn off. I've made the mistake of leaving a power inverter plugged into the back and forgot about it. I've also forgotten to turn off my stereo with the key in the ignition, and I've killed my battery with my amps cranked in the driveway for too long
Needless to say, batteries don't like to be sitting in a discharged state or sulfation results, ie, early death My battery is 3yrs old, and the little colored battery condition bubble is always red instead of green. It's on its way out due to abuse on my part...
