My buddy has a 99 f350.. Its got a weird vibration in the front end.. when your not in 4WD this vibration is loud, coming from the front end.. As soon as you switch into 4WD the noise stops.. So you take it back out of 4WD and as soon as you hit a bump the noise starts again.. We thought it was hub related... So we put in a set of Warn manuals.. Cut all the vacc line off etc.. The noise still exists !! My 03 does a similar thing but way less noticeable and only at highway speed.. I've replaced all my u-joints and have a set of warn manuals to put in as well..
It sounds like it is your needle bearings inside the wheel bearing assembly(not the actual wheel bearing itself) that supports the stub axle. I had this problem the seal on the back side of the steering knuckle went bad and the bearings seized and wiped out the stub axles. I was able to have a friend build up the bearing surface of the axles with a TIG welder and then I machined them to size (I'm a Tool and Die Maker luckly) because you can only buy the axle assembly inner and outer together if this is the case, and they are salty!!! I hope this helps but I also hope it's not the case $$$$$$.
I just had mine all apart... regreesed it all when I did the u-joints.. So I'm fairly familar with it.. So its the needle bearings that your front axle slips into from the back side ??? Like you take out your hub and take off the circlip.. Then undo the 4 bolts from the back side and pull off your main bearing assembly.. when you look into that piece there is some needle bearings.. is that the ones that you're talking about ???????

The end of the shaft seems to be ok.. Lordco sells the complete bearing assembly here in town.. So he picked one of those up and we're going to put it on and see if the noise goes away... I'll keep ya posted !!
Hey guys..... for anyone that has this problem in the future... The noise that only happened in 2WD and went away when you turned in the hubs or put it in 4WD .. It's the main bearing that was stated earlier in this post.. You can buy a complete bearing assembly from your local lordco or napa and bolt the new one right on.. The noise is completely gone !!!!!! Its a pretty easy fix once you know what it is !!!
Thanks engineer58... you were right on the money with that one !!!!!

Wouldn't they sell you the inner needle bearing only???
Yes I think they listed it.... The wheel bearing is in the same assembly as well and its all a sealed unit.. We just thought we would easier to replace the whole thing and start fresh !! for $250 it was worth it not to bother trying to pull seals out and hope the wheel bearing wasn't shot as well... Go big or go home... lol
my truck does the same thing so the bearings you are talking about are they the needle bearings inside the hub assembly??
It is the approx. 1" long needle bearing on the inward facing side of the wheel bearing assembly that the axle shaft rides in. They can be pressed out of the wheel bearing assembly and new one pressed in. If your wheel bearing is ok you can just replace this bearing. That is all I did my wheel bearings were fine and that was about 20,000 miles ago. Almost guranteed you will need to replace the big seal that gets pressed on the axle shaft. Chances are that seal is what caused the problem to begin with, my bearings were packed tight with corrosion from the seal being torn.
did the ball joints not to long ago and replaced the seal the way i look at it if i have it apart im replacing the seal dont feel like taking it apart again any idea how much for the bearing???
