I've had recent issues with the front wheel bearings. The Suv went from 2001 - 2009 on the same front wheel bearings before needing to be replaced. Since August 2009, I've had 3 front wheel bearing jobs done: August 09, May 10 and July 11. I think something in the front suspension is causing them to wear faster than normal.

It doesnt leak oil and at 2000 miles, the oil looks like I just changed it!! The only thing I would like to fix right now would be a shaking in the steering wheel when I apply the brakes. I checked the front brake pads and there is 1/3 of the pad left. Maybe the rotors need to be turned? Or the ball joints are going?

There is also a high pitched vacuum leak sound coming from somewhere I can't locate. It goes away when I accelerate.
Are you still on original
- Alternator?
- Starter?
- Radiator?
- heater core?

If not, what mileage did they go?

I have 140k and only plan to keep my 99XLT for another 4years/180K for towing our 25' camper and was wondering if I can get away without replacing the above parts. I have replaced the fuel pump, one COP, brake lines, tranny cooler lines, rear control/trailing arms, front air-shocks, front end (Moog upper arms and lower bj), idler arm and tie-rods, and front end-links, but the rust issue is beginning to be a losing battle
My engine is still good with no leaks, and the transmission is in good shape, flushed/new-filter every 30k prior to towing use, now plans to do that @20k, with possible drain and fill in-between.

The hub went qucikly on mine when I used the Chinese made one from Advanced AUto - they replaced it under warranty with National brand iirc (Korea) and seems to be holding.

My 98 4x4 has 127k and my 99 AWD has 193k both have been trouble free! They are both Eddie Bauers 5.4's, with all opt's in my opinion the best sport ute. Ever built!

Thanks Donnie869, NCExpy,

You pretty much answered what I should consider replacing if I'm to keep my 99 XLT with 140k for another 40k/4 years - not fun to stall on the hi-way with trailer in tow!

Thanks hotroddsl.
My fuel pump failed at around 135k too.
So I guess alternator CAN survive up to 180k+, this makes me think I can wait until 160k and decide from thereon. I will check my idler pulley and see if it's still okay.

How about waterpump, ever replaced it?

No sir original water pumps on both! These have been hands down the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned! I don't think I will ever get rid of them! Just pass them down to the kids, untill the can afford their own, then put them on cabin duty, I guess the 99 can plow as good as a 77 f150? Right?

Thanks again, good to know.
I really want to keep this one but it's more realistic to keep a timeline of use given it's state. I guess in dry areas, underbody rust is not an issue, unfortunately here in New England, it is. I have replaced rear lower control arms, the brake lines, and fixed the tranny cooler lines due to rust - also managing the rusting on frames itself, as well as under the doors and on the rear wheel wells. No major break-out yet but only because I attend to them.
So I'm not driving a rust bucket from the outside - but underneath, it's not the prettiest sight.
